Lesson Four

Our Response

1. (Acts 17:30-31 NIV) "In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. {31} For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead."

God overlooks people who sin today.

2. (John 14:15 NIV) "If you love me, you will obey what I command." and (John 14:21 NIV) "Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him."

We can love Jesus without obeying Him.

3. (Mark 16:16 NIV) "Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned."

We must believe and be baptized to be saved.

4. (Ephesians 4:4-5 NIV) "There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called-- {5} one Lord, one faith, one baptism;"

There are many baptisms.

5. (Acts 8:30-39 NIV) "Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked. {31} ‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?’ So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him. {32} The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: ‘He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth. {33} In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.’ {34} The eunuch asked Philip, ‘Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?’ {35} Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus. {36} As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, ‘Look, here is water. Why shouldn’t I be baptized?’ {37}(some translations, like the NIV, do not have verse 37) {38} And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. {39} When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing."

Philip shared the Good News about Jesus with the eunuch.

The Ethiopian wanted to be baptized immediately in water.

7. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him. {39} When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing."

Both men went down into the water and both men came up out of the water.

8. (Romans 6:3-4 NIV) "Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? {4} We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life."

When we are baptized into Christ Jesus we are buried with Him in His death and will therefore also be raised to live a new life just as Jesus was raised from the dead.

9. (Acts 2:38 NIV) "Peter replied, ‘Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’"

We must "repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins."

You have completed Lesson Four of the Good News For You Bible Study Online Course.  Please continue with Lesson Five at your earliest convenience. It is our prayer that you will come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ.

We must first believe that Jesus is the Son of God sent to redeem humankind from our sins. We must then repent of (stop doing) our sins. We then need to confess Christ as Lord and submit to Him by being baptized (immersed in water) for the forgiveness of our sins. With our baptism into Christ we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. We are thereby add to the church and expected to be faithful participants in the church.
