Jesus Keep Me
Near the Cross
1869
Words: Fanny
Crosby 1820-1915
Music: William H. Doane 1832-1915
“May
I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Galatians
6:14
Fanny Crosby was often asked by composers to put proper words to a new
tune. Sometimes she would listen to the tune and say, “That tune says
to me. . .” It is amazing how often she found a perfect fit.
That happened with this great song about the cross. Her friend William
Doane made such a request and she came through. The central idea is the
cross and our goal is to stay near it. This hymn was sung at
Aunt Fanny’s funeral.
Prayer Focus: Help us walk daily in the shadow of the cross.
