LESSON XXIX

  • Weak Verbs: Ayin Vav / Ayin Yod - also referred to as "middle vowel" or "II-Vav / II-Yod" or "hollow verbs"
  • The infinitive construct form is the lexical form of hollow verbs.
  • Characteristics
  • The middle consonant never appears as a consonant
  • It may drop out completely (e.g. - qal perfect 3ms - {Uq becomes {fq )
  • It may appear as a vowel (e.g. - qal imperfect 3ms - {U:qiy becomes {Uqfy )
  • The preformative vowel of the qal imperfect, nifal perfect, nifal participle, hifil imperfect, hifil imperative, hifil infinitive construct, and hifil infinitive absolute is a f
  • The preformative vowel of the hifil perfect and hifil participle is the " rather than a i
  • The preformative vowel of the hofal is the U rather than a f
  • The intensives, instead of doubling the middle letter may double the last letter. These are rare forms
  • Piel becomes Polel - the third consonant is doubled rather than the middle consonant (e.g. - }Uk becomes }"nok  )
  • Pual becomes Polal
  • Hithpael becomes Hithpolel
  • A linking vowel ( ye )is usually inserted before the hfn endings of the qal imperfect and before all consonantal afformatives of the nifal perfect and the hifil perfect. At other times the linking vowel may be O for the nifal perfect.
