LESSON XXVIII
- Pe Nun Verbs - a verb whose initial root consonant
is n (the
first letter is the n)
- Distinctive Characteristics - Four Basic Changes
- When in a form the n consonant has the sheva ( :n ) the n drops and becomes a dagesh
forte in the next letter (to the left). This happens in the qal imperfect, nifal
perfect, nifal participle, and hifil and hofal.
- Qal imperfect - e.g. lop:niy becomes loPiy
- Nifal perfect - e.g. $ag:nin becomes $aGin
- The n is lost in many imperatives
- The n is lost in many infinitive constructs resulting in a
segolate forms
- e.g. - $g:n becomes te$eG
- In the hofal the preformative vowel reverts to a quibbus.
- All intensives (piel, pual, and hithpael)
are regular
- In some cases the last n of a verb may disappear - note especially
the qal infinitive construct of
}atfn (he gave) it is t"T (to give)
- Note: xaqfl acts like a Pe Nun
