LESSON XXVIII

  • Pe Nun Verbs - a verb whose initial root consonant is n (the first letter is the n)
  • Distinctive Characteristics - Four Basic Changes
  • When in a form the n consonant has the sheva ( :n ) the n drops and becomes a dagesh forte in the next letter (to the left). This happens in the qal imperfect, nifal perfect, nifal participle, and hifil and hofal.
  • Qal imperfect - e.g. lop:niy becomes loPiy
  • Nifal perfect - e.g. $ag:nin becomes $aGin
  • The n is lost in many imperatives
  • e.g. - $og:n becomes $aG
  • The n is lost in many infinitive constructs resulting in a segolate forms
  • e.g. - $g:n becomes te$eG
  • In the hofal the preformative vowel reverts to a quibbus.
  • All intensives (piel, pual, and hithpael) are regular
  • In some cases the last n of a verb may disappear - note especially the qal infinitive construct of }atfn (he gave) it is t"T (to give)
  • Note: xaqfl acts like a Pe Nun
