LESSON XXVII
- Lamed He Verbs - a verb whose final root consonant is h
- Distinctive Characteristics
- All perfects without afformatives end in hf
- All imperfects without afformatives end in he
- All imperatives without afformatives end in h"
- All infinitives construct drop final h together with the
vowel that precedes it and replace them with
tO
- Infinitives absolutes end either in ho (qal, nifal,
piel, pual, and hithpael) or
h" (hifil, hofal, and piel)
- All masculine singular participles (except qal
passive) end in he which is changed to
h" in the construct state
- Qal passive participle (ms) is patterned after the
strong verb, except that y takes the place of the final h -- thus hUnfB becomes yUnfB
- The Lamed He will disappear when a suffix is added
- Before consonant suffixes or afformatives a yod is
preserved -- e.g. - fhyilfG
- Before vowel (or vocalic) afformatives the yod is
lost -- e.g. - UlfG
- NOTE: 3fs qal hft:lfG - an old tav returns - all
other forms with vocalic afformatives are simply shortened by the dropping of h together with the
vowel or vocal sheva that precedes it.
- The Lamed He has "thematic" vowels - in
certain verbal forms there will be a vowel preceding the lamed he.
