LESSON XXVI

  • Lamed Alef Verbs - is a verb whose final consonant is an Alef.
  • Similar to Lamed Guttural
  • Two basic variations
  • The Alef tends to quiesce (lose its value as a consonant) therefore likes nothing under it (there is no vowel pointing). This is notable particularly before consonant afformatives.
  • E.g. - ft)fcfM yit)fcfM
  • The vowel before the Lamed Alef is usually long. If it is not already long it is lengthened to a long "a" (qames) or sometimes the long "e" (sere).
  • E.g. - )fcfm was )fc:min here the patah has changed to a qames

  • A BeGaD KeFat letter standing immediately after a quiescent ) loses its dagesh lene.
  • The stem vowel before hfn endings in the imperfect 3fp and 2fp, and in the imperative 2fp, is a segol in all stems of the Lamed Alef.
  • Stative Lamed Alef verbs differ from other Lamed Alef verbs in three areas:
  • The stem vowel before consonantal afformatives in the Qal perfect is sere rather than qames.
  • In some verbs of this class the Qal active participle (ms) has the same form as the Qal perfect 3ms.
  • In some verbs of this class infinitive construct forms sometimes end in hf or t
