LESSON X
- Segolates - bisyllabic nouns that exhibit:
- Singular forms are usually always accented on the first
syllable that have "a", "e", or "o" classes.
- Second syllables will normally take a segol as its vowel,
but could be a patah when the middle or final consonant is a guttural.
- The plural forms of segolates will often shorten the vowel
of the first syllable and lengthen the vowel of the second syllable.
- The joining of two nouns to for a "construction"
- They are usually joined by a maqqef
- They are often used to show possession (e.g. $yi)fh-sUs )
- Translated: "the horse of the man" or "the
man's horse"
- sUs is in the
construct state
- $yi)fh is in
the absolute state
- Two states of nouns in construct relationship:
- Absolute state (the second word in the construct
relationship)
- Construct state (the first word in the construct
relationship)
- Shortens as much as it can
- Never has the definite article
- $yi)fh-day the
man's hand

of a prophet

the man's word
- $yi)fh-y"sUs the man's horses*

- *The vowel of a plural construct will be as shortened as
much as possible.
- **The last consonant of a construct of a feminine singular
noun will become a t
- ***A proper name, even though it is not marked as definite
acts as though it has a definite article.
